William Becknell was a trader and merchant. He is best known for establishing the Santa Fe Trail, a major commercial route between Missouri and Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the early 19th century.

In 1821, Captain William Becknell left Franklin Missouri to trade with New Mexico. His route became known as the Santa Fe Trail.
William Becknell, the first American trader to reach Santa Fe, arrived in 1821 with a a pack of donkeys loaded with goods. Becknell sold the merchandise he brought for many times more than what he would have received for it in St. Louis. Becknell's route came to be known as the Santa Fe Trail. The trail left Missouri River near Independence, Missouri, and crossed the prairies to the Arkansas River. It become a very busy Route.
William Becknell, a merchant and adventurer, was the first American to head for Santa Fe. In 1821, Becknell led a group from Franklin,Missouri, across the plains. When they reached Santa Fe, they found Mexicans eager to buy cloth and other goods. Other Americans soon followed Becknell's route. It became known as the Santa Fe Trail.
The Old Spanish Trail began at Santa Fe (now New Mexico) and ended at Los Angeles. It was a path for Spanish explorers and traders beginning in the mid- 1500s, and reaching its widest use during the last years of greater Mexico. from about 1830 to 1848. It was still in use even after the majority of its territory was ceded to the US in 1848, following the Mexican American War.
He was the Governor of New Mexico Territory from 1893 to 1897.
