He probably was so promised. Harold's claim was very thin, his father was basically a (powerful and extremely ambitious) civil servant (earl Godwin), and claiming via the female line was not much to go on in those days. Edward refused to have any children by his Queen, a relative of Godwin.

What was William duke Of Normandy's election speech?

This is what William's Rep (if he had one) could of said : William has the best claim to the throne because Edward promised it to him. When Edward was a boy in 1016, King Cnut invaded England and Edward ran away to Normandy for safety. Edward stayed in Normandy until he became King of England in 1042. It was important, at that time, for Edward to protect his throne from attack and rebellion. Edward turned to William for help. He sent Norman soldiers to live in England and protect Edward. William's army is strong and could protect England no matter what the circumstances are. In return, Edward promised the English throne. Harold of Wessex also said that he should become King of England when Edward died.

How did the quarrel between William and Harold start in 1066?

Legend has it that Harold supported William's claim to the throne as legitamte. However, when King Edward the Confessor died in January 1066, Harold rushed to London and had himself crowned King. As a result, William invaded England and defeated Harold at Hastings. The legend is that Harold promised to support Williams claim to the throne over his own, but when both the Witenagemot and King Edward himself (who was also supposed to have promised the throne to William) selected Harold to succeed Edward, he accepted it. This was a betrayal in William's eyes, and it committed the two kingdoms to War.
