Yes he was. He was encouraging during the war and he spoke from the hip and didn't sugar coat what was happening. If he made a mistake he would be honest about it. When times were tough he was always a beacon of hope and encouragement (he did suffer from depression so this would have been quite a feat and shows the dedication of this man. Truth is eluded through most wars from most governments.) His would often discuss certain political details with his wife who was a very wise and often helpful aide for him.

What he said, in the most part, especially in the second world war, was erudite in the extreme. Time and time again he hits the spot precisely in what he says. His judgment of the mood of the nation is extraordinary, and he appeals to people's sense and aspiration, even those of his political opponents. His authorship of the History of the Second World War is a masterpiece. What probably sets Churchill apart is simply this : he was a man of great experience and he knew his destiny, his time and his capabilities, and were all focused upon the same thing, which of course at one time was the very survival of the British nation. Undeniably Churchill was an oustanding speechmaker; to this day his words are stirring and show his implacable determination.

He had a speech impediment- he stuttered. If you listen carefully to recordings of his speeches, often you will here a first sentence that begins "Hmmm" the humming sort of sound permitted him to begin speaking smoothly, instead of getting st-st-st-st-stuck on a word.
