Why is wine important to Romans?

To present day Romans it is a national drink. To the ancient Romans and all other Mediterranean countries it was a staple beverage being manufactured in various types. The ancients remember, did not drink wine as we do today. They liberally watered it down so there was, in many cases little or no alcohol content. If the water was suspect, the wine (or vinegar) mixed in it was thought to ease any water born illness. Wine was also used as an ingredient in medicines and skin lotions.
