The apple logo is to commemorate a man who invented a machine that translated what the Germans were saying during the second world war, however this man turned out to be homosexual. Homosexuality was not approved of in them days therefore the police through him and his lover onto the street and allowed people to violently attack them. The inventor was later taken to court were the decision was made that he would either be put in prison (where he would be murdered by other prisoners for being gay) or take hormone tablets that would give him woman features etc.. He's favorite book was Snow White therefore he took a ruby red apple poisoned it and took a bite. He decided that he would rather die in a peaceful way than be murdered or be something he didn't want to be.

Apple saw him as a brilliant inventor and because of that and his bravery used the name 'Apple' and their logo is a bitten apple.

Steve Jobs and / or Steve Wosniak the founders of Apple were fans of Newtons laws of physics, and the name at least partly comes from that - the original Apple logo had a picture of Newton sitting under the famed Apple tree with the Apple falling onto his head. If you read into it it's a mark of divine or chance inspiration, being in the right place at the right time, or most probably, having a "Eureka" moment. So they called it Apple in reference to that. Google "original apple logo" and look in the images section to see the original logo before it was changed to a simple Apple symbol. The "bite" out of the Apple could also be read to symbolise the "tasting of knowledge" since Apples also represent knowledge, they were thought to be the fruit of the Garden of Eden from The Bible. That line of thinking might also explain why the first Apple computer sold for $666. I guess they were into that kind of thinking, bucking the system, getting knowledge out of the hands of the elitists and into the hands of the people etc. Steve Jobs at least was into that sort of thing at the time. He had a vision of computers in every home, accessible information that was easy to get at - he saw that as a major divide between the information haves and the information have nots.
