Prejudice and racism existed beyond the Civil War. Loopholes in national, state and city laws allowed for discrimination against blacks. The North was more tolerant of blacks, so many left for job opportunities and a better life.
After slavery some blacks were already in Canada and the north, although some did stay in the south.
No blacks went north to escape the slavery of the southern plantation owners in the south.
The black slaves of the 19th century used what was called the Underground Railroad which was put together by whites who were against slavery and freed slaves. The Secret Railroad lead to the North and Canada where it was free from slavery because obviously in the south it was more rural so they didn't want to abolish slavery.
The Civil War freed the slaves ended slavery in the US. Many blacks left the South and moved to Northern cities.
