because the people of the countries in our empire decided they didn't want to be ruled by us and they wanted to make theyre own rules, so they revolted and demanded freedom - but we still have the common wealth :) yay us :)
All empires come and go. This is partly because the way the world works changes and the reasons for the empire become less valid. In the case of Britain, two others powers were in their ascendancy - America and the USSR. Also, Britiain had lost a serious amount of money fighting a war. Then after a few years many countries of the empire became restless and wanted independence - notably India, led by Mahatma Ghandi.
