Johnson had been a life-long Democrat when Lincoln chose him for vice-president. Noboby felt any particulr loyalty towards him and he was from Tennessee, a slave state. When Republican congressmen disagreed with his reconstruction policy and he vetoed their legislation, they decided to impeach him. and get him out of office. Some of the Senators went along with them.
