it is extinct because in the late eocene period the water was getting colder so the fish population went down. with less fish the basilosauruses eventually died of hunger. (either that or the water became to cold)

No one properly knows, but the one big reason is that 65 million years ago a meteor hit the Earth causing a shift in panels (or something like that) that made all the natural disasters that killed the dinosaurs happen.

Mosasaurs, relatives of lepidosaurs like lizards and snakes, are not close relatives of the other large cretaceous marine reptiles, the euryapsids. That group includes ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs and by the late cretaceous those latter animals were in decline and mosasaurs were apparently thriving.

Much like the dinosaurs and many other successful groups of organisms of the Mesozoic mosasaurs went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous. The probable factors likely have to do with the impact of a large meteor in Mexico that is supposed to have had much to do with the extinction of the dinosaurs and other biota. It may not have been the singular cause and much about extinctions remain mysterious. However, the effect on the ecosystems may have been important. Probable prey groups such as ammonites were affected and this in turn likely impacted Mosasaurs.

Based on the evidence collected, scientists have calculated that about 65 million years ago a huge asteroid crashed into Earth near the Yucatan peninsula of what is now Mexico, causing about 80% of all animal species on Earth, including all dinosaur species, to go extinct.

Mosasaurus was a 50+ foot long, carnivorous marine lizard that lived in Europe between 70 and 65.5 million years ago. Mosasaurus, along with all other mosasaurs, non-avian dinosaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, and many other species died out 65.5 million years ago, an event called the K-T extinction event. The most commonly accepted theory for why 75% of Earth's species were wiped out within a few years or less is that an asteroid 6 miles in diameter crashed into the earth, leaving a crater 100 miles wide. So much dust was thrown into the atmosphere that sunlight was blocked for months or years, causing plants to die. Without plants, herbivores starved, and without animals to hunt, carnivores starved.

Most people say it was because of a massive meteor but if you are a Christian, then it shows that Noah's flood killed them off.
