The English language was adapting to the new classical vocabulary, giving writers a choice of words with similar meanings. This enabled them to orchestrate their writing like a symphony. If they wanted to speed-up, they would use the short Anglo-Saxon words. If they wanted to slow-down, they would use the longer Italian-style words.
