The final link, the Franklin Strait, was discovered by Francis Leopold McClintock in 1859. Author Ken McGoogan has suggested that Dr John Rae deserves the honour for discovering the Rae Strait in 1854 but overlooks the fact that the Franklin Strait was uncharted at that time. McClintock himself declared Sir John Franklin to be the discoverer of the passage.Until very recently, there wasn't one.
