Henry Hudson hoped to find a Northwest passage to China. He didn't make it though. The Hudson River was named after him.

European nations sent explorers in search of a Northwest Passage to find a direct sea route to Asia. This route was believed to offer a quicker and easier way for Europeans to trade with Asia, bypassing the long and dangerous journey around the Cape of Good Hope or through the Strait of Magellan. Ultimately, the search for the Northwest Passage led to the mapping of new territories in North America.
All explorers, and this probably includes Amundsen, hope to find -- to be first to see/ experience/ witness something in the wild unknown where they explore. Amundsen was also motivated by geographic conquests, including the Northwest Passage, the North and South Poles.
It would make it easier for trading ships to sail from Europe to Asia.
So they didn't have to get their spices through Turkey and Italy.
