When flour dust mixes with air in just the right quantities it can become a very explosive mixture. In fact, even today flour is classified as a hazardous material.

In a shaking, vibrating, drafty, WWII-era aircraft, many of which were powered by huge engines which belched fire even in normal conditions, flour could be a very dangerous payload.
