It is a myth that the battle of Gettysburg started over shoes. The fact is Heth was told there were shoes there, and although they were never located, mainly because Jubal Early's troops had been through the town a few days before, and would have certainly taken everything of worth. General Heth's Division ran into the Buford's Cavalry Division on the Cashtown Pike just west of the Town of Gettysburg. The Union Cavalry brigade that first engaged Heth's division was commanded by General Gamble.
At dawn on July 1, 1863 the early troop movements saw Confederate General Heth' division marching towards the town of Gettysburg. Badly needed supplies were needed and Heth believed the road he was taking would not be highly defended. Instead he ran into 3,000 mounted Union infantry. This forced Heth's retreat. During the battle, however, Union General John Reynolds was killed. He was the first general to be killed at Gettysburg.
Confederate General Henry Heth graduated from West point in 1847. Among the 38 graduating cadets in that year, Heth ranked 38th. Heth's division was among the first Confederate one to make contact with the Union on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Heth's division was the leading group of A. P. Hills lll Corps. Heth encountered 3,000 mounted Union infantry men and was forced to retreat.Additionally, Heth served at the battles of Chancellorsville and at the Siege of Petersburg. As an aside, Heth was a cousin of Confederate General George Pickett.

Initally, General Bufford's cavalry stopped Heath's advance along the Chambersburg Pike west of Gettysburg until Gen. Reynold's First Corp arrived.

Robert E. Lee was in command of the southerners. However it was a division commanded by Major General Henry Heth that made first contact with blue coated cavalry.
Major General William Dorsey Pender saw action on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. He brought his division forward to reinforce General Heth. On day two of the battle he was wounded and sent back to Virginia. He died there of his wounds on July 18, 1863.He had previously been wounded in prior battles 5 times.
