Why did japan choose Pearl Harbor as the first target in there attack the US?

That was where the entire US pacific fleet was based at the time. The hope was to completely destroy the US ability to fight a naval war, leaving the pacific entirely under their control.

Japan hoped that a surprise attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor would render the US helpless to stop the Japanese advancement through the Pacific as they wanted to expand their holdings and conquests of other countries in the region. Without a fleet to stop the Japanese or to defend itself in the Pacific the US would have to concede defeat. Obviously, this did not occur. The United States instead started production of war materials including ships and the aircraft carriers were quickly out into action.

Pearl Harbor was the home base of the US Pacific Fleet. Japan believed that a death blow directed at Pearl Harbor would take the US Navy out of action in a period of time in which they could take over much of the Pacific. Then if the US surrendered, then the war in the Pacific would be won for the Japanese. However, this just made the US angrier and more determined to obliterate the country that had sacrificed American lives with no mercy, strafing unarmed individuals.
