Sutter got a land grant from Mexico for the land that is now Sacramento. He built the fort to be the end point for the wagons and people he knew would come to CA eventually. What he didn't count on was the Gold Rush that was started by John Marshall at the mill Sutter built. Sutter was also prominent in the start of the Bear Flag Republic. John C. Fremont went to see Sutter before the republic was declared and told him he had to take sides. Fremont wanted to bring the Mexican governor to be held at Sutter's fort, but since Sutter had a Mexican land grant Sutter wasn't sure he could count on him for help. Finally, Sutter did agree to keep the governor and the rest is history. On Sept. 9, 1850 California became a state and because of the gold rush Sutter died a poor man.
The gold rush began at Sutter's Mill in Colima, CA. John Marshall discovered gold in the traces of the mill in 1848. Once the gold was discovered the rush was on. A newspaper headline stated "Eureka, Gold Found". The average pay was about 10.00 a month, but a man could make 50.00 a day if he found gold. Within months over 10,000 a day were coming into the area any way they could. Sutter lost in the gold rush. He lost his fortune , mill, and ended up a broke unhappy man. By 1850 CA became a state on Sept. 9, 1850.
John Sutter came to California with a Mexican land grant and built a fort in what is now the city of Sacramento. He also built a saw mill a little further north. He was an interesting man and really saw a lot of California history as well as made a bit. When John C Fremont and his crew captured the Mexican governor to declare the Bear Flag Republic they took him to Sutter to keep. At that point Sutter had to throw his "lot" in with the Americans. In the spring of 1848 one of his men John Marshall found gold in the trace at the saw mill. Marshall was able to keep the secret for a bit, but when more was found the cry of "Eurkra"went up and people began to flood the state any way they could get here. Sutter knew he was in trouble with the finding of gold and as a result he lost everything. People came on to his land and there were so many he couldn't stop them. When he died he was a broke man. California became a state on Sept. 9, 1850.
Technically, one of his employees found gold on his property. This event caused many to pour into California thus sparking the Gold Rush. Incidentally, this also caused Sutter's employees to desert him, his land overrun with squatters, and him bankrupt soon after.
