In June 1940, Italy's mobilised strength was 1,630,000. This would later rise to a peak of 2,363,000.Mussolini once boasted of 8 million Italian bayonets but that was not credible or achieveable. At the outbreak of the war the Italian army had a strength of 73 divisions made up of 106 infantry regiments, 12 light infantry regiments, 10 mountain regiments and 12 cavalry regiments, 5 armored regiments, 32 artillery regiments and 19 engineer regiments. The average Italian infantry division was little smaller than the American infantry division. And out of the 73 infantry divisions, only 20 were fully manned and equipped. The problem with the Italian army was its equipment. It had 7,970 artillery pieces but only 246 had been manufactured since 1930. Many had been upgraded with pneumatic tires replacing old wooden wheels. Their aircraft, trucks and tanks were even more out of date. Their tanks were too small to combat a modern mechanized army. Highlanders (not lowlanders) wore the kilt in battle up to the 18th century. The last battle on British soil was in 1746, the Battle of Culloden where the kilt was worn on both sides by the Highland units of the Jacobite forces and the Highland units of the Government Hanoverian forces. After the battle the act of proscription was introduced banning the wearing of the kilt in the highlands (although not the lowlands) - "Highland Clothes (that is to say) the plaid, philibeg, or little kilt, trowse, shoulder belts, or any part whatsoever of what peculiarly belongs to the highland garb; and that no tartan, or partly-coloured plaid or stuff shall be used for great coats, or for upper coats". The ban stayed in place until 1782. The ban was however exempted for the British military and Highland regiments including the Black Watch who fought in kilts throughout the period. The original kilt of plaid was a larger garment than todays kilt and was also wrapped around the upper body. The "little kilt" became popular towards the end of the 18th century. The kilt continued to be worn in battle by highland regiments up to the first world war. It's last recorded use in battle was at Dunkirk during the second world war by the Cameron Highlanders. It continues to be used by British Regiments for ceremonial use.
They were losing badly due to outdated tactics where foot soldiers and cavalry on horseback were crushed by German panzers regiments. After the reimbarkment of the British Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk, under protection of French regiments, they had little choice. The Blitzkrieg tactics had taken the military by surprise -they thought the Germans simply couldn't cross the Ardennes- the army was utterly disorganized, Civilians were fleeing in droves on the roads pushing handcarts with their belongings under German aviation fire.

Very much so at times. Sure he says, "Now I realize Cilla blah blah...love..blah blah", but he still a) Thinks Rab is wonderful bleh bleh so frikin wonderful b)Has more sympathy for Lt. Stranger because he looks like Rab c) Is more worried for Rab than anyone else in this books (It's understandable though...since Rab is at risk of being shot y lobster-backs) and d) Johnny acts like a heartbroken girl when Rab leaves for Lexington. Johnny Tremain is a gay little Revolutionary horse boy. D.W.I.
