Republicans are generally conservative, while Democrats are generally more liberal.
If you are talking about today's political parties then, on the average, the Democrats are considered more liberal and the Republicans are considered more conservative. However, there are liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats. The Republicans tend to favor less government and the Democrats tend to favor more government, when dealing with domestic problems and individual and states' rights. Republicans tend to favor economic laws that regulate as little as possible. Democrats favor legislation that regulates industry for the protection of the consumer. Democrats tend to favor some sort of government aid for those individuals who need assistance. A Green Party was created in the US in 1984 and it is much more liberal than the Democrats, but it cannot be considered a "major" political party yet because of it's small membership. I believe the "Greens" do have influence in the politics of some European nations.
In the US: 2000-2002: 50 seats for each party (Republicans had the tie-breaking vote of the Vice President) 2002-2004: Republicans (51 seats) 2004-2006: Republicans (55 seats) 2006-2008: Democrats (51 seats, with 1 independent) The Liberal Party held the majority in the Australian Senate.

Horace Greeley was a cranky newspaper editor who carried the liberal republican and democratic banners against Grant. He was the founder and editor of the New York Tribune and a vocal critic of President Ulysses S. Grant's administration. Greeley ran for president in 1872 as the nominee of the Liberal Republican Party and the Democratic Party, but lost to Grant.

Typically when a liberal succeeds, it is not good for the country. Republicans and Democrats disagree about what success is.
