the liberal republicans
Because that's the party he joined in the 1850's. He was originally in the Whig party, but the Whig party fell apart in the 1850's and no longer exists. The Republican party originally started as a group of people, mostly ex-Whigs, who wanted to get rid of slavery in the US, and Lincoln agreed with them. It should be noted that the political parties have changed over time. You can't think of the Republican party of Lincoln's time as being exactly the same as it is today- there were different issues and different ideas, and these change over time. It may be hard to believe, but around the 1890's and early 1900's, the Republican party was actually the progressive liberal party- quite the opposite of what it is today!
The Republican party (which mind you, is much like the democratic party today,) was the soel target of the Federalists when they passed they law as the Federalists wanted to rid of their political opponents in order to restore order and organization in America, but that act expired in 1801 and in 1802 the years to live in the US became 5 once again
Hopefully. The series of revolutions in the spring of 2011 certainly aimed to get rid of corruption, but it is hard to know if they will succeed. For many people in the middle east, getting rid of corruption means getting rid of Western influence. Technically they can be free of it, but what region doesn't suffer from at least some problems of corruption?

Slavery.
No. Never, sorry. That's what George Washington wanted and obviously everyone ignored him. It's hard to completely rid a nation of two key political beliefs.
The Democratic Party supported slavery during the 1860's. The Republican party was created in 1854 to oppose slavery. During the mid 1900's, the Democratic party became the party that supported the Civil Rights movement. NOT COMPLETELY TRUE. The Republican party opposed slavery and they DID support the Civil Rights Movement along with Democrats in office. The south was still a Democratic based area and JFK feared if he had fought hard for civil rights in the south, he would lose his voting base there. He did it anyway and that is why he was killed in Dallas (The South). MLK Jr. was a Republican, Charles Heston was a Republican who was the 1st actor to march in the Civil Rights movement. All the Republicans in Congress pushed for civil rights as well. Earl Warren, the judge who stated that in brown vs board of education the separate but equal doctrine was "not equal" and he got rid of that doctrine and allowed blacks to integrate in white schools. He was Republican.
Getting rid of corruption would prevent the selfish motives of some from disturbing the well-being of others. It is part of an effort to establish an ideal society.
