The Republican Party was founded in the early 1850's to end slavery and in some states to ensure the Catholic Church did not gain too much power. John Fremont was the first Republican to run for the US presidency in 1856, however, he lost to the Democrat James Buchanan. In 1860, the party system in the US was divided. There were four candidates running and Abraham Lincoln was elected to the US presidency. Many people in the South feared that Lincoln would do all he could to stop the spread of slavery and to marginalize the South in national politics. President-elect Lincoln was a true Unionist. His stance against slavery came second to keeping the Union in tact. He promised to enforce the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act and did all he could to help the South to understand he was not going to harm slavery where it already existed.

He made every effort to keep the nation unified, however, slave owners and others feared that Lincoln would focus on the slavery issue.

With that said, first South Carolina, then six other states seceded. After the attack on Fort Sumter, Lincoln rightfully called for volunteers to end the Southern rebellion. This caused four more states, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas and North Carolina to secede and join the Confederacy.
