There were a number of Confederate leaders who viewed Zebulon Vance's staunch Unionism prior to the US Civil War, with skepticism. Nevertheless he ran for the Governorship of North Carolina in 1862 and won. Clearly his loyalty to the South was unquestioned by most of the people in North Carolina.
