Overland traders since Marco Polo had brought Indian spices such as pepper and curry, and other oriental spices, to Europe. These were enormously expensive and rare after being carried by camel caravans from China and India, through the Arabian deserts and past the Arabian thieves. Columbus figured that one ship-load of spices from the orient, delivered to Spain or Italy, would be worth the risk.

Marco Polo discovered India on his voyages in the late 13th century, and brought back many goods and spices. However, it wouldn't be until the 16th century that India would be mapped by European cartographers.

India got it's independence on fifteenth august 1947.
It was Vasco Da Gama who reached India for the first time from the Indian Ocean in the fifteenth century. He established the sea route to one of Asia's richest country at that point of time.
Europeans, mostly France and England took almost absolute control over India's government, but focused only on securing trading rights in China. In order to add additional information, France lost its battle to take control over parts of India. This was one result of the French and Indian War. In both India and China, force was used.
