Why did many people believe that the Vietnam War reflected racial and economic injustices in the US?

If you were white, privileged, and/or attending a university, chances were very good that you wouldn't have to serve in Vietnam. An example is George W. Bush, who was able to get a deferment because of his father's connections and wealth. People of color in the U.S., especially blacks from urban areas, were drafted in huge numbers. Only 12% of the American population was black, but over 35% of Americans fighting in Vietnam were black. The Vietnam War occurred before the Civil Rights Movement had really heated up. So many blacks were facing racial discrimination, with few job opportunities and advancement. The number one choice to earn equality for blacks was through serving in the army. Sadly the promise wasn't well kept.
