Rev. King wrote the letter as a response to local clergymen penning "A Call To Unity" which was an appeal to move the civil rights movement out of the streets and into the courtroom, to the exclusion of public protest.

This letter was one of the few completely original works that MLK, Jr. wrote, and shows his true views on the Movement, unlike most of his other works, which were either heavily plagiarized or ghostwritten.
