Initially, they joined out of a sense of patriotic duty. Later, public opinion (accusations of cowardice and so on) drove many to volunteer. Later still, when even that didn't produce enough men, parliament introduced conscription (compulsory military service). Conscription was used in World War 1, when men wouldn't join the army the Government used conscription as a way of making men join. They had absolutely no choice.
