Money directly affected the US Civil War because slave labor in the south was far cheaper than paying workers to pick cotton or tobacco. Labor costs are a major factor in a business and if you can keep labor costs down, profits go up. So by demanding the southern plantation owners free their slaves the north was telling them they would have to pay higher wages for workers.
