He didn't choose by himself to be prophet or religious leader. He was assigned by Allah to be a prophet and messenger to convey Quran revealed to him by Allah (or God and same God in Christianity and Judaism).
Because the Prophet got the revelation from Allah (SWT) and he was told to spread the truth. Or else why would he want to see everyone go to Hell?
i think legends are often associated with birth of religious leaders because the people want to know how important the legend is and where it started.
There is no picture of Prophet Mohammed. Because he was afraid, his follower may worship him. All the pictures with the prophet pbuh on it are false!! But for the people that want to know how he was and looked like, there is(a part of) a chapter in the book "Sahih Bukhari" that says something about him. Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7: book 72 (Book of) Dress: (hadith)number 783 - 814
I think Ram Mohan Roy and Swami Vivekananda.
There aren't any religious leaders in Hinduism. other person: yes there is. Their prophet, (which doesn't hold all the power) is called the Maharishi. The leader of a single Hindu monestary is called the shankaracharya. Those who hold most of the power are probably the gurus and Satgurus. ------ Shankaracharya is not a leader of Hinduism. There are no leaders. Maharishis in the past may have defined what Hinduism is today but there are none any more. There are spiritual people whom people may worship but none can claim to be a leader and people are free to practice the religion the way they want to.

I'm unsure of the question (You may have it in the wrong section)... If you mean in the religious sense (mostly pentecostal) then it not really something you become. Its more of a Calling... If you were meant to be then you will be. Whether you choose to walk in that path is up to you.

Shias believe in 2 things differently to our dear sunni brothers which is that a divine successor or prophet cannot be chosen by anyone other than God (example is our rejection of the democratic election of Abu Bakr after the death of the prophet). We believe that God clearly chose Imam Ali through the prophet (refer to ghadir khum). Secondly main belief regarding this is that whoever is a prophet or Imam must be infallible, meaning sinless whereas sunnis believe otherwise.
I have never heard of a Kiss leading to eternal damnation, but you may want to discuss this further with your own local religious leader (priest, pastor, etc).
