Well, the war was not over (officially) although Gen. Lee had surrendered his forces a few weeks before. A state of war still existed between Union and Confederate Forces in Texas, although both sides had pretty much agreed to a truce. The reason for the battle is still a mystery- Union forces were ordered by their commander to attack the Confederates One stated belief is that the Union commander was looking for "glory in combat" before the war came to an end. A sad battle that served no purpose, and resulted in deaths and injuries to soldiers on both sides.

The Battle of Palmito Ranch occurred after the Civil War was officially over because communication between the Confederate and Union forces was slow and inconsistent. The Confederate troops in Texas had not received news of the surrender of General Robert E. Lee until weeks later. Additionally, there were disagreements among commanders about whether to continue fighting or surrender. These factors led to the battle taking place on May 12-13, 1865, over a month after the official end of the war.

Which battle occurred in Texas after the civil war?

Palmito Grande. But 'after the Civil War' does not strictly mean anything, because there was never a declaration of war (it would have meant Congress recognising the Confederacy as a sovereign nation), and therefore, there was never a peace treaty - only an armistice. Ask a few Southerners. You'll soon hear that the Civil War isn't over yet.

How many cows are need to have a ranch?

It depends on how large the ranch is. A ranch that is only 100 acres may only have 50 cows; "real" ranches that are over 1000 acres in size will have over 500 cows.

What was the last battle if Gettysburg known as?

Appomattox Court House (not sure about spelling) The Final Battle of the American Civil War was the Battle of Palmito Ranch and was fought on May 12th/13th 1865. The Battle of Palmito Ranch took place in Cameron County, Texas and was fought between the Federal Forces of the 2nd Texas Cavalry Regiment, the 62nd US Coloured Infantry Regiment and the 34th Indiana Volunteers Infantry against the Confederate Forces of the 2nd Texas Cavalry Regiment "Mounted Rifles", Giddings Regiment, Anderson's Battalion of Cavalry, Colonel Benavides Texas Cavalry and remnants of other Confederate Units as well as some southern sympathizers. The battle was fought over two days. On the first day the Federal Forces advanced on the Confederate Camp at Brazos Santiago Depot near Fort Brown, Brownsville and had early success before being repulsed by a Confederate counterattack and driven back to Whites Ranch. On the Second Day the Federals at Whites Ranch marched westward passing about a half mile from Palmito Ranch and as these forces engaged Confederates deployed near the Rio Grande a second Confederate Force struck the Federal right flank and routed it. The battle cost the Federal forces 115 men killed, captured or wounded while the Confederate Force suffered only 5 or 6 wounded and 3 captured by no deaths. A clear Confederate victory in what was little more than a Skirmish but what proved to be the last battle of the American Civil War.
