Some of the early German immigrants moved to areas such as Ohio because they preferred to be farmers instead of city workers. The first great migration out west took place with the California Gold Rush, as people looked to make it rich. Later on, as railroads expanded, traveling out west became much easier, and land began to open up for sale. This also resulted in many people moving out of the eastern cities to become farmers in the Midwest to the west.
