Probably an 'escapism'. We wanted to see (in black and white only!) beautiful people, happy endings, and scenes to take us away from our ordinary 'war time' lives. We also wnted to hear the great music of the 40s, happy, sad, and bitter- sweet that were often a part of the?movie. Remember there was no tv, only radio, 78 records. newspapers, movies, and newreels shown prior to the 'double features'. I was 15 when WWII started and 19 when it ended - and very impressionable. The GI's who were overseas also wanted to see movies in order to remind them of home. I have a transcript of a diary of a soldier and he recorded every movie he saw while on Anzio beach. Some of his movies were fairly new releases. Here is a list of some movies he saw between Oct 1943 and May 44. "Call Out the Marines" starring Victor McLaglen & Edmund Lowe, 1942. "Thank Your Lucky Stars"- Dinah Shore, Betty Davis, Errol Flynn, Bogart, Olivia de Havilland. 1943. Listed one as "Two Girls from Chicago", which was probably the movie "Two Senoritas from Chicago", Jinx Falkenburg, Ann Savage. 1943. "The More the Merrier" is set in WW2. Charles Coburn, Jean Arthur & Joel McCrea. 1943 (Was remade in 1966 as "Walk Don't Run" with Cary Grant.) "Keeper of the Flame" Spencer Tracy & K. Hepburn, 1942 "The Sky's the Limit" - Fred Astaire, Joan Leslie, 1943. "Stormy Weather" highlights some of the era's greatest African-American entertainers. 1943 Another movie in his diary was probably the 1940 romance comedy, "Always a Bride" starring "Superman" George Reeves. "Hi De Ho" must have been an earlier version of the 1947 all-black musical of same name.

One reason that people would want to see movies over stage plays that movies present images that a play couldn't show. Additionally, they can start and pause a movie to watch at their convenience.
