∙ 7y agoThe volcanic soil near Mount Vesuvius is very fertile, which makes it excellent for farming and settlement. There had been no major eruptions for several centuries at Mount Vesuvius prior to the destruction of Pompeii.

∙ 13y agoOne reason they built and settled near Vesuvius was that the soil was rich and it was fertile farmland. Another reason was the climate. That area of Campania was a resort area where the wealthy would go to escape the heat of the city in the summer. Also the volcano had not been active in generations, so it posed no threat to them, or so they thought.
