The settlers in South Carolina came from Spain, the settlers arrived in South Carolina because of the want of new land, as well as trying to create a buffer area against Spain in Florida (Which eventually became Georgia). In all though, it mostly for new planting regions and land.

In fact, Jamestown is a settlement in Virginia and not South Carolina. So this answer does not apply to you if you are looking up South Carolina. Actually the people who were going to Jamestown were lazy englishmen who didn't do anything but pan for gold and that's why so many of them died.
