Geography can effect in a lot of ways like the fact that they have large mountain ranges surrounding them in most areas. This can cut them off from Europe and did until the silk road came along and even then most traders did not want to make the journey because it was still very treacherous. Because of the sea and unforgiving desserts and mountains china was cut off from a lot of technology from Mesopotamia and Europe for a while. So they had to come up with a lot of stuff for themselves, and when they did become exposed to all of this they modified much of it (like paper for example). This is why the silk road was so important for their economy.

Silk Road is a name which indicate a network of trading routes across Asia. It has been called Silk Road because the most important good which was traded along the routes from China to the Mediterranean Sea was silk. This was an expensive material which was sought by the rich in Europe. This was a problem for the Romans because wealthy Romans spent a lot of money on buying silk. Since the Chinese did not want to buy any Roman goods, this trade constituted an outflow of money from the Roman Empire. A substantial part of China's wealth came from the silk trade.
it is because they want to .
I think the Ottoman Empire did because the Silk Road, which was the main trade route between Europe and Asia, ran through their land. So they could shut it down by putting their sodiers on the Silk Road, which they did. But if you just want the answer, it was the Ottoman Empire.
They didn't necessarily want just the spices. The silk road brought common trade goods as well. Things like silk, hence the name The Silk Road. Spices were much in demand. The world had tasted the difference exotic spices made to common foods and demanded more. These flavors were not just used to enhance taste but used to mask bad tastes and preserve foods. The prices asked for the spices made the trade a lucrative business to be in.
