Why did people want to go to the moon?

Mostly because we see it almost every day. The official reason president John F. Kennedy chose to go to the moon is because the Soviet Union had beaten the United States in every space accomplishment up to that time. The Soviets were the first to launch a satellite into space, the first to launch an animal (dog) into space, the first to launch a man into space and the first to send a woman into space. Kennedy wanted to set a goal both reasonable and challenging enough to capture the imagination of the American public, who would be paying for the trips with their tax dollars.
