People preserve bodies (which makes mummies) because the person was od some importance to a family or to a kingdom.
---------------------------
egyptian mummies doesn't necessarily mean that they are from an important family or kingdom. Egyptians believe in after-life so they preserved the bodies by mummifying them...so it means even the poor ones we mummified. They did not have tombs as elaborate and full of riches like the pharoahs or upperclass family but they were mummified still.
*by the way, there are many types of mummies. Some of them are even WAYYY better preserved than Eyptian mummies.
Because in ancient Egypt, they believed in afterlife, so they wrapped the mummy up so when they went into the afterlife, they would be intact, skin and all.
