Colorado became a US state because the citizens of the Colorado Territory asked to join the Union.
The discovery of gold brought people to the area and the inhabitants realized that some form of government was needed to protect their rights and property. The US Congress created the Territory of Colorado in 1861 and, in 1879, President Ulysses S. Grant signed a proclamation admitting the state of Colorado to the Union as the 38th state.
To find the Gold in them there hills, although many were simply passing through to get to California or Salt Lake City or to Santa Fe and points South. A few established ranches, some broke the prarie and tried farming. Many settlers came to Colorado in the mid-1800's, during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. This is when the cities of Denver and Colorado Springs were established. Also, since the air was very crisp and clean, much of the eastern seaboard population came to Colorado to help with their health issues, like tuberculosis.
