because king Henry wanted to choose his own bishops and threatened the pope to let him so then the pope excommunicated him but the king Henry notice he was losing respect so he put on a fur shirt (what beggars and peasants wore) and went to the popes winter palace in the alps the problem was it was freezing but Henry marched there and begged the pope to let him inside but the pope said no and went to sleep then the next morning the pope notice Henry was still there in the same spot he stood in the snow all night long. but the pope wasn't impressed and went back to bed then the next morning he went to check if Henry was gone but it turned out he stood out there all night again so pope Gregory let him inside and accepted his apology and recommunicated henry
