The special forces.
In the year 1961, President Kennedy authorized the wear of the green beret for Special Forces soldiers. At the event that this happened, President Kennedy delivered a speech whereby he made the green beret a "mark of distinction in the trying times ahead." The Green Berets became a very real distinction of excellence among special forces at that very moment.
Kennedy wanted "Special Forces" to do special work. He approved the creations of the US Special Forces (Green Berets) and SEALs (In WW2/Korean War; known as UDT-Under Water Demolition Teams, aka Frogmen).
President Kennedy sent special forces troops, known as Green Berets, to advise and train South Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam War. These troops were sent to help the South Vietnamese government and military fight against communist forces in order to prevent the spread of communism in Southeast Asia.
