Assimilation is the act of absorbing, taking in, or incorporating [something] as one's own. Regarding Immigration, and usually culture in general, reformers usually advocate assimilation in order to promote a sense of ownership within the context of the new country.

The concept of ownership as applied to intangibles like knowledge, experiences, or culture, for example, is a way to boost and reinforce positive behaviors that are beneficial to both the individual and to the society to which he/she belongs. Social responsibility, common customs, participation in communities, financial contribution to public services and the local economy, and particularly laws always vary from country to country - some being more similar than others.

While 100% uniformity should not be an expectation (diversity begets strength), there is a certain necessary threshold for conformity within any society in order for it to function properly. An extremely simplified example of this is traffic. Based on the assumption that traffic is a sort of society, there will then be a base set of rules by which people govern their behavior when participating in that society. Red, stop. Green, go. Read signs. Be aware of those around you. The list goes on. The point is that when people do not follow the accepted set of rules in a society, problems (like accidents!) can and do occur.

Assimilation should not be taken to mean ignoring or eliminating an immigrant's previous culture, but rather to mean the cultivation and nurturing of an appreciation for a new culture by its new members.
