Slavery became more popular in the latter half of the 17th century due to the demand of labor. The need for slaves became more and more necessary to farmers because their plots were growing, so they needed more workers for them. Tobacco was growing in demand, so many farmers were inclined to get slaves to work their fields: SUPPLY AND DEMAND. Also, slaves were cheaper, easier to replace, and easier to purchase/find/keep as opposed to indentured servants.

The main reason that the population of the British North American colonies rapidly increased during the eighteenth century was that the volume of slave trade increased a great deal. The number of black people in the colonies increased by 10 to 35+ times from the beginning of the eighteenth century until mid-century.
The colonies were obtained by mainly English expansion westwards from the 16th century onwards. Colonies were established during the reign of Elizabeth 1 - hence the name Virginia - but they failed. Colonisation expanded rapidly (and brutally) during the 17th. As territory was taken from indigenous peoples they became colonies in their own right based on English customs and laws. In short, they were stolen.
The technological boom in the 19th century contributed to the growing industrial strength of the United States. The result was rapid Urbanization, or growth of cities mostly in the regions of the Northeast and Midwest.
