The plains NATIVE AMERICANS did not randomly attack. The settlers were not innocent. The settlers attacked Native Americans also which is why Native Americans fought back. The Europeans who came forced Native Americans onto reservations and raped/tortured them. They also forced Native American young to go to boarding schools to get rid of Native American cultures and languages.
