This is a claim made by the Christian Bible, however, there is no basis in historical fact for this claim. At the time Jesus was supposed to have lived, there were many men who claimed to be hamoshiach and were followed by various groups. At most, Jesus would have been one of many such false claimants.

This did not sit well with the authorities as Jewish unrest and messianic movements were considered problems. Any one who could move large crowds (and was not approved by the political and religious leaders) had to go.

The pharisees (who were the leaders of the jewish religion at the time) felt that their authority and reputation was being threatened because Jesus told people to follow different laws and broke some of the Pharisee's laws.
