This is a claim made by the Christian Bible, however, there is no basis in historical fact for this claim. At the time Jesus was supposed to have lived, there were many men who claimed to be hamoshiach and were followed by various groups. At most, Jesus would have been one of many such false claimants.

The Jewish leadership of the era held their position only if they collaborated with the Roman imperial occupation. They had to help suppress any dissent against Roman rule in order to keep their power, and anyone who was being proclaimed as Messiah was an obvious threat. After all, the biblical prophesies about the Messiah said that he'd re-establish the kingdom of David, and that sounded dangerously like a revolt.

The circumstances that led to Jesus' death were?

Jesus was considered a threat to the religious and political establishment at the time. His followers were calling him "king" and "messiah". This did not sit well with the authorities as Jewish unrest and messianic movements were considered problems. Any one who could move large crowds (and was not approved by the political and religious leaders) had to go.
