The largest event that caused African Americans to leave the south was the great flood on the Mississippi River in 1927. The flood and its aftermath are documented exquisitely in a book entitled "Rising Tide" by author John Barry.

The flood is one of the singular events in American History, and very few people knew about it until Barry's work was published. An excellent read by one of the best American non-fiction writers.
