In the time before WW2 I think, and I do not know this to be fact, that what was going to happen in Germany & Europe as a whole, to the Jewish population, was simply beyond anyone's imagination. By 1945 the Russians had liberated Auschwitz, but told no one of the horrors they uncovered. When the British, for example, arrived at Bergen-Belsen what they found was totally shocking: It was wholly unknown. ___ The whole subject is very fraught. In Britain, the Foreign Office received the first reports in December 1941 from the Polish Home Army (underground, resistance) about routine mass gassings (at Chelmno). The first official who read them wrote in the margin 'Bolshevist Propaganda?' However, mounting evidence reached Britain, and in late 1942 and early 1943 there was talk in the media about what might be done to intervene or help. The government seems to have deflected attention from the issue. In purely practical terms there was not much that either the British or the US governments could have done. It is, however, noteworthy that the USAAF bombed Monowitz (Auschwitz III) because it was producing chemicals ... Moreover, there is that embarrassing reconnaissance photo of Auschwitz-Birkenau, that apparently conveyed nothing when analysed at the time (1944). In April 1944 Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler escaped from Auschwitz and provided evidence, of a high quality, and it reached the Allies, who issued a thunderous denunciation. A little later, on 22 July 1944, the Soviet Army liberated the first major extermination and concentration camp, Majdanek. As it had been hurriedly abandoned by the SS, many of the key installations were still more or less intact. The Soviet Union called a press conference and also invited Western journalists to visit the camp, which they did in August 1944. Nevertheless, it seems not to have made the impact that one would have expected. My own view is that the Allied governments regarded the whole issue a distraction from the war effort.
