They really didn't until the 1800's after Jefferson bought the Louisiana purchase. When Clark published his book on the trip across the new territories people saw they could go beyond the regions they all ready had. There are people who seek a new life for one reason or other. With the Homestead act, the railroads, and gold rush people pushed west. The idea of Manifest Destiny push people west because the idea was God wanted them to take and use the land.
