Railroad lines from Chattanooga linked major distribution centers of the Confederacy; it was a key in Lincoln's plan to "divide and conquer" the South.
Chattanooga, North Carolina was not one of the capital cities of the Confederacy. The first Confederate capital was Montgomery, Alabama and soon after, Confederate President Jefferson Davis moved the capital to Richmond, Virginia.

The Battle of Chattanooga lasted three days. The Confederate defeat there broke the hold of Confederate General Braxton Bragg there and reduced the chances of having Tennessee retaining its position in the Confederacy.
The Confederacy wanted to win and were sort of forced to fight by the North.
The failure of the Confederacy to capitalize on its victory at the Battle of Chickamuga, basically helped its defeat at Chattanooga and had allowed an invasion route to be opened into Georgia with Chattanooga as a base for Union operations. Union General Sherman took advantage of this and his Atlanta campaign began.
