most of them left for religious freedom
Yes, but probably for all the wrong reasons. It was not just freedom that was wanted, it was also the freedom to own slaves and to establish the southern plantation lifestyle that they had been forced to leave behind. It was not freedom of religion that they sought, it was freedom from the Catholic religion.

Free settlers go to a place because they want to and they can leave if and when they want. Convicts sent to a settlement are subject to additional controls while they are there, they don't necessarily want to be there and they can't leave as long as they are still classed as convicts.

well... some left for jobs in america. some left for freedom of religion or freedom of speech. if you read the Bill of Rights that is mainly what they came for.
Religious freedom is essentially the act of preventing laws that interfere with a person's free exercise of their religion. We do not prevent free exercise of religion in the United States and no people need to leave the U. S. in search of that degree of freedom. However, some individuals interprete their own religious freedom as the right to impose their particular religious beliefs on others, to denigrate, discriminate against and persecute others who do not share their beliefs. Some people in that group may leave, such as the few individuals who leave to join Islamic extremists
