They had just completed the Seven Years Wars with the United Kingdom and were still bearing a grudge about their defeat. That meant that they would gladly aid anyone who might be able to inflict damage on the UK. After the Battle of Saratoga it appeared that these former British Colonials just might have a chance so King Louis XVI determined that the Enemy of his Enemy was his Friend and formally allied France with the US. It was an expensive task to undertake, but he was committed.

France had military material, arms, munitions, a standing professional Army and a respected Navy. It had a very long history of fighting against the United Kingdom for centuries. The Continental Army was desperate for aid. The Americans did not own a single ship of the line or armed merchantman. France answered the call and provided what was needed. After the British defeat at Saratoga France openly allied itself with what would become the United States.
