On the biblical account, the Israelites conquered Canaan because they needed land and because God had promised it to them. However, it is reported that over 80 per cent of scholars say that there never was a military conquest of Canaan as described in The Bible. The Israelites were West Semitic people themselves, in effect Canaanites, and had migrated into the Palestinian hinterland towards the end of the thirteenth century BCE.

According to the Bible, the Israelites came to live in Canaan because God promised them this land. They conquered the Canaanites, city by city, with bloody violence.

According to modern scholars, the early Israelites were really Canaanites themselves, who, for whatever reason, migrated peacefully to the previously sparsely occupied Canaanite hinterland. After a period of centuries, their language and culture diverged from those of their West Semitic neighbours, and the people began to believe that they had always been a separate nation. Scholars now say that there never was a military invasion of the land of the Canaanites.
