What does red wine represent during passover?

For the four cups of wine at the Passover Seder, red wine is preferable. This is based on Proverbs 23:31), "Do not look at the wine as it reddens," which implies that red wine is the best kind.Red wine also commemorates the blood of circumcision and the blood of the Paschal sacrifice. The Israelites were commanded to circumcise all their males before the Exodus.Red wine also reminds us of the drops of blood that were put on the doorposts and lintels, as a sign when God passed over the homes of the Israelites, not permitting the destruction to smite them (Exodus 12).Red wine also serves as a reminder of the blood of the Jewish children whom Pharaoh slaughtered (Exodus 1).See also:More about Passover

What was its official name and what did the Jews have to apply to their doors for protection?

I'm assuming you're referring to the 10 plagues of Moses when he said that the first born son of every Egyptian would be killed? In order for Jews to prove that they were Jewish and not have their sons killed, they were instructed to sacrifice a lamb and put its blood over their doorways so that the angel of death would "passover" their homes and not take their child. The feast in remembrance of this is called Passover.

What is the name of the thing Jews put on the outside of the door at Passover?

Most likely it is some blood. To remember Moses days.Another AnswerNowadays, no one does that. That was only during the Exodus from Egypt. I think the questioner is referring to the Mezzuzah which Jewish people put on the right hand side of their doorposts, not just at Passover but always.

What happened during the first Passover?

Read the Book of Exodus in the Bible. The first Passover was the night of the tenth plague. After Pharaoh refused to let the people of Israel go even after nine plagues, Moses informed Pharaoh that God would kill all Egyptian firstborns. The people of Israel were told to kill a lamb and put its blood on their doorpost. God "passed over" the houses with blood on the doorposts when killing firstborns. That night Pharaoh finally allowed (actually commanded) the people of Israel to leave Egypt. This freedom from slavery in order to serve God is celebrated by Jews every year, and has also been an inspiration for other people.

Why did god tell the israelites to put lamb blood on their doorposts?

Today, we think of God as omniscient - he should not need a sign to tell him who was an Israelite. But to the author of this passage, the anonymous author now known as the Yahwist, God was anthropomorphic - having human characteristics - and needed a sign so that he knew who was am Israelite. Thus in Exodus 12:23 the Hebrews were told to put blood on their lintels, and God would pass by those doors and smite the Egyptians in the other houses.
